My definition of intellectual property is that it the ones creative work put into writing.
An expert's definition from http://www.wipo.int/about-ip/en/
"Intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of the mind: inventions, literary and artistic works, and symbols, names, images, and designs used in commerce."
Example of intellectual property could be books, news, magazines, stories and very much every creative idea put into writing, be it electronic or otherwise.
When manipulation and sharing of intellectual property happens, then, that is a violation of the copyright law and it is against the law.

Hi Abdi,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your post on intellectual property.
Be careful when you say that manipulation and sharing of intellectual property is against the law! It is only against the law if the copyright holder restricts all use of their material. As we have learned in class, manipulation and sharing of resources for academic purposes is not against the law, and Creative Commons licensed materials often give users permission to manipulate and share resources as long as credit is given to the originator.
If we are unable to share our intellectual property, there would be no libraries, no museums, no YouTube...no free Internet resources...no open access resources...no music in the park...people would have very limited types of information and entertainment available to them!
That is a scary thought!
